  • ReElect: Gerald Ford
Inspired by the upcoming presidential election, the first year students in the SVA MFA Design program created “Re Elect: Old Presidents, New Candidates.” For this exhibition, students redesigned campaigns for former presidents as if they were running in today’s world. Included are 20 presidents – from George Washington to George Bush – whose modern designs range from critical commentary to strategic campaign, all influenced by who they eventually became after winning the election.

I created a modern campaign for the 38th American President, Gerald Ford. Often referred to as the “Accidental President,” Gerald Ford is the only US President who was never elected to an office higher than Congress. Ford took over the Vice Presidency when Spiro Agnew resigned and, shortly after, became President upon Richard Nixon’s impeachment in 1974. Although Ford is best remembered for his controversial pardon of Nixon, his most important role was bringing honesty and stability back into the White House after Watergate. While Ford was often portrayed as an uncoordinated klutz, he was actually one of the most athletic presidents in history. A star football player who was voted MVP at the University of Michigan, Ford maintained a deep love for the game the rest of his life. This campaign underscores Ford’s strengths as a football player, and uses this theme to highlight his often forgotten accomplishments in the White House: intercepting a national nightmare and allowing the country to heal.

  • Albert Einstein Chair
Albert Einstein was an intensely curious and rebellious child. Rather than sit in a chair as told, Einstein would have questioned the chair’s function and tried to improve it – in this case, flipping it over so he could lie back, rest his feet, look at the stars, and ponder the universe.

  • Txt Msg Baby Blanket
As text and instant message become dominant forms of communication, the English language is being altered and abbreviated for the sake of time and cost. Although text message language (or "textese") can be convenient, it can also be quite harmful to the vocabulary, grammar, and even thinking skills of young children; kids today are learning the abbreviations of words before they learn the words themselves. By embroidering this on-the-go shorthand into the slow, deliberate medium of a baby quilt, I hope to address the potential effects of text message language on future generations of children.

  • Arrivederci, Roma
This video tells the story of how my paternal grandparents met and began a new life in Italy – and eventually New York – after surviving the Holocaust. Despite her advanced dementia, my grandmother, Frieda, who is now 89, still has an uncanny memory for the music she once loved. If you listen closely, you can hear her humming in the background.

  • Imperfections Make Life More Interesting
Stefan Sagmeister asked us to create a project based on something we've learned in our lives so far. Through the years, it's become clear to me that imperfections make life more interesting – not only in terms of ourselves and our bodies, but also when it comes to the creative process and our overall life course. I created this stop motion video, using only hair on the shower wall, to express this idea.

  • Post-Op Departure Pack
In light of the often cold and impersonal hospital experience these days, I chose to touch the hearts of patients recovering after orthopedic surgeries. I created personalized hospital "departure packs" to provide patients with comfort and security in the days after the operation; in addition, the packs included clear, uncomplicated instructions for continued care at home. The design is intended to hark back to the romantic days of medicine in the 1950s, and bring some of that warmth back into today's hospitals.

  • Sex Education Hwatu Cards
This project was created for Allan Chochinov's "3-D Design" class in the SVA MFA Design program. Hwatu cards—or “flower cards”—are traditional playing cards that have been a fixture in South Korean culture for centuries. Adapted into an educational game, these new cards facilitate social relationships between mothers and daughters in order to overcome the challenge of improper sex education in South Korea. Integrating a social objective into a familiar game, the project aims to encourage women and girls of all ages to speak more openly and honestly about sex. Ultimately, the cards facilitate greater self-awareness, control over one’s body, and build intimate relationships between girls and women.

The card designs incorporate my own watercolor paintings from the series, "Interior Tissue."

This project examines the physical and personal life cycle of the female as prescribed by traditional social norms—from puberty to sex, love, marriage, and motherhood. Made from a working clock, its hand follows a timeline of personal milestones that many women feel they must achieve on a particular schedule.
